Beach Mining For Gold, Part II: Alaska and California Alaska Beach Placers: The beach at Nome, Alaska, is a narrow strip about 200 feet wide, from which over 2,000,000 in fine gold has been washed ; the flaky gold averaged 7000 or 8000 colors to the pennyweight.
This beach placer mine area is the 7mile long segment of the present Gulf of Alaska beach from Cape Yakataga to the mouth of White River. The map site is the approximate midpoint of this beach segment. The location is accurate. It was included in locality 5 of Cobb (1972 [MF 373]; 1979 [OF 791246]).
Reserves: The beaches at Yakutat are broader than those in the Cape Yakataga area. Including a very small part of the Situk beach, Foley and others (1995, p. 56) assumed a wedgeshaped prism 0 to 11 meters deep, averaging 300 meters wide for a linear distance of 24 km down the coast.

There are seasonal settlements in remote locations at Tsiu, Icy Bay, Cape Yakataga, AkweItalio, and Dry Bay which exist primarily in support of sport and commercial fishing, mining, logging, recreation, and government operations. Like most of Southeast Alaska, but even more so, Yakutat is geographically isolated with no road or rail access.
There is a limited road network in the vicinity of Cape Yakataga. Narrow lanes head west from the Cape to the unmaintained bridge at Duktoth River and east to mining claims and private residences. The largest airstrip in the planning area is located onequarter mile west of Cape Yakataga, between South Channel Yakataga River and Duktoth River.
